Representative Tim Walz (D-MN) announced his intention to seek the Ranking Member seat on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee in a letter to his colleagues, following Rep. Corrine Brown’s recent departure from the Ranking Member position.
In an e-Newsletter sent to his Minnesota constituents dated 22 July 2016, he wrote “We need a leader who can work with the Veteran Service Organizations, the VA, and Veterans themselves to develop effective policy. As the highest ranking enlisted soldier to serve in Congress, I believe I am the right person, at the right time, to lead this committee.
I am honored to already have been endorsed to become the next Ranking Member of the Committee by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the Association of the United States Navy (AUSN), the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States (EANGUS), and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers.
Pursuant to the rules of the Democratic Caucus, Rep. Mark Takano will temporarily assume the role through the remainder of the Congress. I am seeking the seat for the next Congress.”
Rep. Walz currently sits on the Agriculture Committee, Armed Services Committee and Veterans’ Affairs Committee. He represents Minnesota First District. Rep. Walz retired from the Minnesota National Guard as a Command Sergeant Major (CSM) as a member of the 34th Infantry Division “Red Bulls” and is a LIFE member of the Minnesota National Guard Enlisted Association (MNGEA).
