Maj Gen Jon Jensen, Minnesota National Guard’s Adjutant General, recently announced the selection of Sergeant Major Brian G. Soper as the incoming Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL) in September. SGM Soper will be assuming the position of the outgoing Command Senior Enlisted Leader, Command Sergeant Major Douglas Wortham, who will be retiring from the Minnesota National Guard.

SGM Soper is a native of Devils Lake, North Dakota, and enlisted in 1984 as a MANPADS stinger crewmember. He began his career on active duty, then continued his service as a traditional National Guardsman in North Dakota and Minnesota.

SGM Soper currently serves in a Title 10 capacity as the Senior Enlisted Advisor – National Guard, U.S. Army Pacific. His previous Title 10 assignments include the Command Sergeant Major for the Warrior Transition Brigade and the Army National Guard G-3 Sergeant Major.

SGM Soper deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served as a Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant. He also deployed once in support of Operation New Dawn as the Brigade Operations Sergeant Major for 1/34th Armor Brigade Combat Team.

As a traditional soldier, SGM Soper served as Squadron Command Sergeant Major for 1st Squadron, 94th Cavalry, Brigade Operations Sergeant Major for 1st ABCT, 34th ID and Battalion Operations Sergeant Major for 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry.  SGM Soper served in several additional leadership positions as first sergeant, platoon sergeant, section sergeant, squad leader, and team leader.
